Yup. Utter shit. They really need to crack down on it. It's even worse than land-grabbing, because domain names have no intrinsic value. At least land is tangible, and could hold resources of its own. I could see selling a domain you're actually using, because you've got something of value you're giving up in return (whatever site you've got up at that domain), but parking some bogus page just to take up space is ridiculous. Maybe I should start hiring people to stand in the parking spots on the street and then charge people to use them. Seems pretty much the same idea.

So I hadn't thought of this analogy when I was writing this post, but domain parking is pretty much comparable to the rich folks who came to the Americas in the early days, bought out as much land as they could afford the instant that it became available for sale, and then resold it in small sections for prices many many times higher than they had purchased it for.

I actually learned a lot about this just by reading Measuring America - http://www.amazon.com/Measuring-America-Wilderness-Fulfilled-Democracy/dp/0802713963

But I think what can be learned about this all is that it's a pattern that occurs "naturally" in society when any new medium of ownership is created - land, virtual land, domain names, etc. If we were to ever settle Mars or the moon, the same pattern would probably occur.

My argument is that this process inhibits society from moving forward and causes social stratification. I don't have a solution to it, but I wish I did. The other argument is that it is perhaps somehow actually helpful to society in some way that I have overlooked. If someone wants to make this argument, I'd be open to hearing it!

I agree.
Why should he profit from his business?

Its just a mess when people can buy domains and resell them for a profit.

I agree 100%. There should be regulations on this crap. I literally spent an entire night trying to find a domain for a business idea. All the good ones were parked...mostly by GoDaddy.com...basterds.

well my point was not so much to eliminate religion. im not anti religious. i was simply pointing out a few facts about the way people of wealth use and abuse common themes to rally a base. my point was really the fact that a true democracy must be used the way it was intended to be effective. if they had intended those in power to just hand it from one generation to another they would not have set up the election system nor would voting be required. they assumed by voting that power would continue to change hands if those in power began doing poorly. as we see now this is not the fact. power remains not only in the same hands far past the point of failing the public but in many cases gets passed to the next generation. this is only made possible by wealth. the average pay for congress is not enough to cause such an accumulation of wealth yet they live far beyond the means of that pay scale. how can one see this and not associate it with corruption. further, has this came to be. it has come to be because they are profiting from there position in a fashion other then the pay granted by their appointment. this is corruption no matter how you look at it. the resolve for this is to not allow a person with a certain amount of income or wealth to hold office and to audit our politicians regularly, the same way we find any white collar criminal. if companies want to pay for ads thats fine. if they want to make a contribution, there should be a bipartisan and anonymous channel to do so. this would allow the benefit of tax breaks, contributing to the community, but with a total disconnect from those in power and avoid the ability by the wealthy to corrupt those who should be representing us in total equality not separated by who will assist in incumbency for the sake of incumbency.

Reply to Richard's comment:

You bring up interesting points. Christianity undoubtedly plays a major role in American society, politics, and government. The Republican party openly associates itself with the promotion of conservative values, and many conservatives are Christian. Christianity and the conservative movement clearly promote many of the same values, such as those on abortion. Additionally, most US politicians claim to be Christian - it makes sense. In a democracy, if you want to get elected, you have to appeal to the majority of the voters. In this case, the majority of voters are Christian.

Be careful though; you are most certainly frustrated with this religious extremism. On a personal note, I agree. I think that many people vote the way they do because of religious teachings rather than their individual philosophies and free thinking. If you want to change things though, you must see things from their point of view. If you promote non-religious ideas, you must support them with as well as you can, otherwise you are just throwing poop right back at the poop throwers.

If we want to promote free-thinking, individual voting, religious extremism is one of the largest, if not the largest, obstacle. But you are not given a perfect world to work with. You are given lemons; you must work with them. I leave you with this question: how can you work with the democratic American society, rather than against it, to change its values and promote a government that obtains its morals from places other than religion?

as all other extremest the Christians have a hold of this country in much the same way other religions control other parts of the globe. the power hungry need a cause to rally a base of support. religion is the most popular as it involves something that terrifies most, death. once you have their support on an emotional level they will do anything you ask because you have the path to a promised immortality even though you are not the idol you hold power and therefore are closest to the idol. if all of this sounds primitive, keep in mind the average IQ is well below 100 and retarded is 72. this is why harsher govs limit communication. limit communication and you limit knowledge. having said this now you can consider why. why the power? the id. in contrast to the popular use of the word ego the culprit for want is the id, thus the word "idiot". simply, they are idiots. yes thats right, idiots. idiot in no way is another word for stupid unless being used by one who is stupid. they are narcissists. the worlds woes are caused by psychologically impaired individuals being in power. there are no checks and balances between power and those that have it because it is most often inherited from generation to generation like the Kennedys who had a run in u.s. politics for 50 years but thats just one family, consider it on a global scale. this is why nations run so well after a revolution. all those in power are the poor that killed of the inbred ass hats. aside from perpetual revolution that would amount to nothing more then chaos, the only way to fix the problem is to separate the wealthy from politics all together. America having more billionaires per capita then any other country is all the proof this point requires.
